Many people want to enter the South African market but don’t know where to start. Some say to register a company first, others say to open a bank account first, and still others say to contact a Takealot business development manager directly. There’s so much information out there that it just makes things even more confusing.
This article breaks down the entire process into seven steps, clearly explaining for each step what to do, how long it takes, and where common roadblocks lie. We recommend bookmarking this page before continuing.

This is a prerequisite for all subsequent steps. You must first have your Chinese passport certified by a South African embassy, consulate, or notary public, and submit three proposed company names to the CIPC for a name search.
Common Stumbling Blocks: The name did not pass the name search. A South African company name cannot be identical to or highly similar to an already registered company name; we recommend preparing at least three alternative names.
Once all the required documents are ready, submit the registration application through the CIPC online system or through a licensed local agent in South Africa. Upon approval, you will receive: the Certificate of Incorporation (COR14.3), the Register of Shareholders, and the Notice of Incorporation.
Common Stumbling Blocks: The registered address does not meet the requirements. CIPC requires a physical office address or a compliant registered address in South Africa; a PO Box alone is generally not accepted.
📌 If you're unsure whether your registered address complies with regulations, please contact us for guidance.

After the company is registered, you’ll need to register for tax purposes with SARS (South African Revenue Service) to obtain an income tax number. At the same time, prepare the KYC documents for FNB Bank and schedule a video interview.
Common Stumbling Blocks: Bank KYC application rejected. The most common reasons are an unclear business description, an inability to explain the source of funds, or proof of address that does not meet the requirements. Submitting pre-screening materials can significantly reduce the likelihood of rejection.
Once you have obtained your company registration certificate and a South African bank account, you can submit an application to Takealot to open a local store.
Required documents: Company registration certificate, proof of a South African bank account, passports of shareholders/directors, information on a local South African tax representative, and a business plan (briefly describing the product categories to be sold).
Submit through officially authorized investment promotion channels,Pass rate exceeds 95%. The approval rate for submissions made independently is significantly lower, as users are unfamiliar with the platform’s review preferences.
📞 If you’d like to submit your application through the official fast track to increase your chances of approval, please feel free to contact Qicaiying.

Once your application is approved, you will receive your Takealot dashboard login credentials. The next steps are: set up your store information, upload your initial product listings, and configure your shipping method (FBL official warehouse or self-fulfillment).
Key Points: Local stores must use FBL (Takealot’s official fulfillment service) to receive full traffic weighting. This means you need to ship your inventory to a local warehouse in South Africa in advance, rather than waiting for orders to come in before shipping.
After selecting your product categories and creating your listings, you’ll need to ship your inventory from China to Takealot’s FBL warehouses (primarily located in Johannesburg and Cape Town).
There are typically two options for initial shipping: air freight (7 to 12 days, high cost, suitable for the product testing phase) and ocean freight (20 to 35 days, low cost, suitable for bulk restocking once orders are steady).
Once the goods have been received at the warehouse, Takealot will update the inventory status to “In Stock” in the backend, and your products will officially be available for sale.
New Store Support Period Policy: No monthly rent for the first 3 months, plus complimentary advertising credits. This period is the most critical “opportunity to break even”—the platform will provide new stores with additional traffic support for new products, so be sure to take full advantage of it.
Add up the estimated time required for the 7 steps above: 1 to 2 weeks (verification) + 2 to 3 weeks (registration) + 2 to 4 weeks (opening a bank account) + 1 to 2 weeks (application to join the platform) + 1 to 2 weeks (setting up the store) + 2 to 4 weeks (initial shipping).
Total: About 3 to 5 months from scratch to the first order. If you hire a professional agency to coordinate all stages of the process simultaneously, you can shorten the timeline to 2 to 3 months.

Qicaiying Business Tour | Exploring South Africa
To address the challenges Chinese sellers face when entering the South African market—such as business entity registration, opening bank accounts, tax compliance, platform onboarding, and operational implementation—Qicaiying provides end-to-end services ranging from company registration to store operations.
1. South African Company Registration Services
We assist sellers in completing the entire process of registering a company in South Africa, including name availability checks and preliminary reviews, notarization of passport affidavits, processing of CIPC registration documents, compilation of shareholder information, and preparation of basic corporate documents, thereby helping them overcome the legal barriers to entering the South African market.
2. Compliance-Compliant Registered Address and Opening a Local Bank Account
We provide a business registration address that meets South African requirements for company registration, bank account opening, and tax registration. We also assist in preparing the full set of KYC/EDD documents required to open an account with FNB, facilitate the video interview process, arrange for bank cards to be mailed directly to the account holder, and help sellers establish local payment receipt channels.
3. Financial and Tax Compliance Support
We provide sellers with local tax compliance services in South Africa, including the assignment of a dedicated tax representative (with no adverse record and who can be held accountable), VAT registration and filing, corporate income tax filing, and annual bookkeeping and tax filing management, to help sellers mitigate compliance risks arising from unfamiliarity with the local tax system.
4. Takealot Local Store Onboarding Service
We assist sellers in setting up local stores on Takealot through officially authorized business development channels, providing document pre-review and process coordination. With an approval rate exceeding 95%, we streamline the key steps from establishing a South African business entity to operating a store on the platform.
5. South African Overseas Warehouses and Logistics Support
Based on a company’s product categories and platform fulfillment requirements, we provide local overseas warehouse resources and logistics support in South Africa to help sellers enhance their local warehousing and order fulfillment capabilities.
6. Operations Training and Mentoring
We offer Takealot operational training and mentoring services covering key areas such as backend operations, listing optimization, FBL warehousing, product selection and pricing, and ad placement, to help sellers get up and running faster.
🔹 We have a local team in South Africa; we are not a purely remote agency.
Qicaiying has established a branch in South Africa, providing local service capabilities that include offering sellers a registered address, financial and tax services, warehousing and logistics, and assistance with in-person matters. When clients receive government correspondence, face bank audits, need to communicate with tax authorities, or require assistance with local business operations, they don’t have to wait for remote assistance—they can rely on local services to help them move forward.
🔹 We understand the platform’s rules and the challenges faced by Chinese sellers
We don’t just provide registration and onboarding services—we also have hands-on experience with the Takealot platform, operate more than 20 store clusters ourselves, understand the differences between domestic and cross-border stores, and are familiar with the platform’s key review criteria, fulfillment requirements, and operational rhythms. What truly adds value isn’t just “telling you the process,” but helping you avoid unnecessary detours.
🔹 End-to-end closed-loop process, reducing communication costs among multiple parties
South African company registration, bank account opening, tax compliance, Takealot onboarding, operational training, warehousing and logistics—if you were to coordinate these steps with different agencies, communication costs would be high and the process could easily break down. Qicaiying offers a one-stop service, allowing sellers to focus more on their products and sales.
🔹 Emphasize compliance; do not encourage gray-area practices
We always recommend that sellers establish a proper corporate structure, bank accounts, and tax foundation from the very beginning to avoid any subsequent issues that could affect store operations due to incomplete documentation, unresolved tax matters, or irregularities in bank reviews. All documents must be signed by the client personally, bank cards are mailed directly to the client, and funds are transferred exclusively through the client’s own accounts throughout the entire process.
🔹 Long-term support, not a one-time delivery
We focus not only on whether a store can be launched, but also on whether our clients can truly succeed in the long run. From setting up the business foundation before launch to product selection, listing, warehousing, promotion, performance review, and scaling operations after launch, Qicaiying aims to be a long-term partner for sellers entering the South African market.
Blue ocean markets won’t stay blue forever. True opportunities belong to those who see them early and act first.
