Can I register a company and open a bank account in South Africa without traveling there? The Complete 2026 Remote South African Company Registration Process: Passport Authentication, CIPC, FNB Video Interview, and Timeline
Published: June 12, 2026

This is by far the question I’m asked most often. Many people want to enter the South African market, but they get stuck on the question of “whether or not to visit South Africa” and end up hesitating for half a year, ultimately missing the window of opportunity for the platform’s business recruitment drive.

Let's start with the conclusion:The entire process can be completed remotely; there is no need to travel to South Africa.

💡 If you’re interested in registering a South African company remotely and opening a local bank account but aren’t sure about the specific process and required documents, feel free to add me on WeChat. qcygscszk or call 18676749275, text 【Open an Account in South Africa】 to receive one-on-one guidance.

I. Passport Affidavit Certification: The first step can be completed in China

The first step in registering a company in South Africa is to verify that your passport is genuine. This process is called “sworn certification” and can be completed at any notary office in any province or city in China.

The process is simple: Bring your original passport, ID card, and household registration book to the notary office to obtain a “Notarized Certificate of Passport Authentication.” It usually takes 3 to 5 business days to process.

After obtaining the notarized document, you will also need to obtain an “Apostille” or have it certified by the South African consulate, depending on the latest requirements from the CIPC. This step can also be handled by a third-party service provider, so you do not need to travel abroad.

II. CIPC Company Registration: Simply mail in the required documents to complete the process

CIPC (South African Companies Registration Office) accepts the following Power of Attorney (POA) format: You sign a power of attorney authorizing a licensed local South African agency to submit the registration application on your behalf.

Required documents: Company name (3 options), certified copies of shareholders’/directors’ passports, registered address (can be provided by the service provider), and a description of the scope of business.

Once all required materials have been submitted, the standard approval process takes 2 to 3 weeks. If a name check reveals a duplicate, you will need to change the name and resubmit the application, which will add 3 to 5 business days to the process.

III. Opening a Bank Account: This Is the Core Challenge

Once the company is registered, the real challenge is opening a bank account. South Africa’s anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) screening processes are very strict. Most banks do not accept account opening applications that are “entirely remote, without an in-person interview.”

But there is one bank that is an exception—FNB (First National Bank). FNB supports video identity verification (Video KYC). All you need to do is schedule an appointment and complete the verification via WeChat or Zoom to open a corporate account.

Documents required for the FNB video interview: Certificate of Incorporation, passports of shareholders/directors, proof of address (utility bill or bank statement), business description (a brief overview of your business model in South Africa), and a statement of source of funds (the compliance background must be clearly explained).

IV. SIM Cards: The Final Piece of the Puzzle for Verification Codes

South African banks rely heavily on SMS one-time passwords (OTPs) for account opening and day-to-day transactions. If you don’t have a local South African cell phone number, many of these processes will be blocked.

There are two ways to solve this problem: Option 1 is to buy a local SIM card when you’re in South Africa and insert it into your phone; Option 2 is to have a local South African service provider handle it for you and have the SIM card mailed to you in China. Qicaiying’s plan includes this service, along with the first month’s service charges.

5. How long does it take to go from zero to getting a bank card?

Add up the time required for each step: passport oath certification (3 to 5 business days) → CIPC company registration (2 to 3 weeks) → FNB bank in-person interview appointment (1 to 2 weeks) → bank approval (2 to 4 weeks) → international express delivery of the bank card to China (3 to 5 business days).

Ideally, it takes about 2 to 3 months from start to finish to obtain a bank card that can be used to receive payments. However, if any step in the process is rejected (most commonly, the bank’s KYC verification), the entire process will be delayed by 1 to 2 months.

So the quickest way is:Get the ingredients right from the very beginning... rather than having to submit additional documents and wait in line over and over again.

Why choose Enterprise Finance?

🔹 We have a local team in South Africa; we are not a purely remote agency.
Qicaiying has established a branch in South Africa, providing local service capabilities that include offering sellers a registered address, financial and tax services, warehousing and logistics, and assistance with in-person matters. When clients receive government correspondence, face bank audits, need to communicate with tax authorities, or require assistance with local business operations, they don’t have to wait for remote assistance—they can rely on local services to help them move forward.

🔹 We understand the platform’s rules and the challenges faced by Chinese sellers
We don’t just provide registration and onboarding services—we also have hands-on experience with the Takealot platform, operate more than 20 store clusters ourselves, understand the differences between domestic and cross-border stores, and are familiar with the platform’s key review criteria, fulfillment requirements, and operational rhythms. What truly adds value isn’t just “telling you the process,” but helping you avoid unnecessary detours.

🔹 End-to-end closed-loop process, reducing communication costs among multiple parties
South African company registration, bank account opening, tax compliance, Takealot onboarding, operational training, warehousing and logistics—if you were to coordinate these steps with different agencies, communication costs would be high and the process could easily break down. Qicaiying offers a one-stop service, allowing sellers to focus more on their products and sales.

🔹 Emphasize compliance; do not encourage gray-area practices
We always recommend that sellers establish a proper corporate structure, bank accounts, and tax foundation from the very beginning to avoid any subsequent issues that could affect store operations due to incomplete documentation, unresolved tax matters, or irregularities in bank reviews. All documents must be signed by the client personally, bank cards are mailed directly to the client, and funds are transferred exclusively through the client’s own accounts throughout the entire process.

🔹 Long-term support, not a one-time delivery
We focus not only on whether a store can be launched, but also on whether our clients can truly succeed in the long run. From setting up the business foundation before launch to product selection, listing, warehousing, promotion, performance review, and scaling operations after launch, Qicaiying aims to be a long-term partner for sellers entering the South African market.

Blue ocean markets won’t stay blue forever. True opportunities belong to those who see them early and act first.
