Published: May 26, 2026

Lately, a lot of people have been asking me: If a foreign friend comes to Guangzhou to work, can they get everything sorted out by following the 6-step guide?

The truth is: The process is fine, but there are pitfalls at every step. I’ve been helping some foreign customers apply for visas recently and have come across quite a few pitfalls! Today, I’m going to lay out all the hidden hurdles that nobody talks about in one go 👇

📌 Let’s be honest: The 6-step process is just the tip of the iceberg

The 6 steps mentioned online:

  1. Company Qualifications for Hiring
  2. Notice Regarding Work Permit Applications
  3. Applying for a Z Visa from Abroad
  4. Pre-entry Medical Examination + Submission of Documents
  5. Apply for an Electronic Social Security Card
  6. To obtain a long-term residence permit

It looks simple, right? But each step has ”prerequisites”—if they aren’t met, the process will come to a complete halt.

⚠️ Hidden Pitfall 1: Company qualifications aren’t something that ”will automatically be approved just by submitting them”

Surface: Submit your business license and the legal representative’s ID, and it’ll be done in 3–5 business days.

Actual:

  • The company mustActual Operations, the shell company system directly intercepts
  • Must haveVenue Registration Certificate, Virtual addresses will be largely impractical by 2026
  • firmsTax Payment HistoryWill be reviewed; zero-reporting and abnormal records = rejection
  • The legal representative's cell phone number must beIt works, the auditor will verify this by phone

Real Case: A tech company had to submit its application five times before it was approved because its registered address did not match its actual office address; it was asked to provide a lease agreement and utility bills.

⚠️ Hidden Pitfall #2: A work permit notification isn’t guaranteed just because you’ve applied for it”

  • Foreign nationalsEducation + Work ExperienceYou need to get certified in advance; it’s not enough to just ”have it.”

Key Reminder: It takes 1–2 months to verify academic credentials, and it also takes 1–2 months to obtain a criminal background check. If you don’t take care of these two things in advance, you won’t be able to apply for a Z visa even after receiving the notification.

⚠️ Hidden Pitfall #3: The 30-day stay period on a Z visa is a trap

Surface: A 30-day stay upon entry after approval

concluding remarks

There are plenty of opportunities in Guangzhou, but when it comes to visas,The process is standardized; the execution is tailored to each individual.. Everyone’s nationality, educational background, work experience, and company situation are different. Online guides can only address the common issues related to the 80%; the remaining 20% hidden hurdles are often what determine success or failure.

My suggestion:Treat the visa application as a project: start the process three months in advance, allow plenty of buffer time, and leave the work to the professionals.
