Where is the new blue ocean of cross-border e-commerce in 2026? Mektor/Takealot/Noon in a single chart
Published: 2026-04-14

The Middle East market, one of the fastest growing cross-border e-commerce blue oceans in the last two years.

Noon, as the largest local e-commerce platform in the Middle East, has the financial support of the Saudi royal family and the Dubai government behind it, and is the local version of ”Amazon”.

But many cross-border sellers entering Noon for the first time step into some completely avoidable potholes.

Today we're listing these 5 pitfalls, and you can save at least 3 months of trial and error by reading them.

❌ Pit 1: Thinking Arabic isn't important and listing in English is fine

Fact: Arabic listings on the Noon platform get 2-3 times more traffic than English-only listings.

Middle Eastern users have a strong preference for local languages, and Noon's algorithm also prioritizes pushing items with Arabic descriptions.

prescription: The listing must be bilingual (English+Arabic), the Arabic part is best to find a native language translator, machine translation will have semantic bias, affecting user experience and conversion.

❌ Pit 2: Copying Amazon's picks over to you

the actual facts: Middle Eastern consumer preferences are significantly different from Amazon's.

A few examples:

  • Consumers in the Middle East are interested inPerfume and BeautyVery high spending power, but brand preference is for local brands + European and American high-end, with low acceptance of Chinese pinto.
  • Electronics are popular in the Middle East, but need to support 220V (as in China), and some products aimed at the North American market are directly unsuitable
  • During Ramadan, the biggest promotional season in the Middle East, which is equivalent to Double 11, the pace of preparation is completely different

❌ Pit 3: Ship without understanding Noon's logistics model

Noon offers two logistics models:

  • FBN (Fulfilled by Noon): similar to Amazon FBA, goods into the Noon warehouse, platform distribution
  • Seller Fulfilled: Seller self-shipment, strict time requirements, late will affect the account score

Where's the pit? Many sellers ship directly into the FBN warehouse, but do not understand Noon's inbound specifications, resulting in goods being rejected or relabeled, incurring additional costs.

prescription: Read Noon's labeling and packaging specifications carefully before entering the warehouse, or simply ask an experienced service provider to do it for you.

❌ Pit 4: Ignoring Value Added Tax (VAT) Compliance

Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia have a VAT system:

  • UAE VAT: 5%
  • Saudi VAT: 15%

Many sellers don't understand the local tax regulations and listings are priced without considering VAT, leading to erosion of profits and even facing tax risks.

prescription: Understand local VAT registration and filing requirements before moving in, and calculate tax costs in advance when pricing.

❌ Pit 5: Not understanding Noon's billing period, cash outflow issues

Noon's billing period is usually30-45 days after salePayback, which is quite a bit longer than Amazon's 14 days.

In the case of sellers with large stockpiles, the cash flow pressure can be very pronounced.

prescription: Cooperate with the use of third-party cross-border collection platforms (e.g., Lianlian Payment, PingPong, etc.), some of which support advance payment and can alleviate the pressure on the account period.

🎯 To summarize.
