South Africa VAT Compliance Guide: The “Tax Landmine” Most Often Overlooked by Chinese Sellers”
Published: August 13, 2026

“VAT didn't get it right, and half of what you make might go to the IRS.”

This is not an exaggeration.Over the past year, we’ve handled thousands of South African VAT registration and filing cases and have found that 90% sellers often run into problems with VAT—not because they don’t take it seriously, but because of confusing information, complex processes, and a lack of reliable guidance.

If you are currently operating on Takealot or planning to list your products there, South African VAT is not an “optional requirement”—it is a must for all sellers who want to grow their business in this market over the long term. The “Compliance Line of Life and Death” That Must Be Crossed.

Not sure if your South African entity needs to register for VAT? Add us on WeChat: qcygscszk, and include “VAT Assessment” in the message. We’ll help you calculate—for free—how much you can save on taxes in the first year after registration.

I. The Core Mechanism of South African VAT: 15% Is Not Your Cost

Standard South African Value-Added Tax (VAT) Rate15% The

The key isn't the tax rate, but your status—Businesses registered for VAT can claim input tax credits at every stage; businesses not registered for VAT cannot recover the input VAT on any purchase.

Not registering for VAT doesn't mean you're saving on taxes; it means you're turning input tax that could have been claimed as a credit into an expense.

Illustrative Example (using a product imported into South Africa with a selling price of 1,000 rand as an example):

annular ringVAT-registered sellersSellers Not Registered for VAT
Imported goods (CIF value of 500 rand)Pay import VAT of 75 rand → DeductiblePay import VAT of 75 rand → Sinking
Pay local warehouse rent (200 rand + 30 rand VAT)Pay 30 rand (VAT included) → DeductiblePay 30 rand (VAT included) → Sinking
Payment platform commission (150 rand + 22.5 rand VAT)Pay 22.5 rand (VAT included) → DeductiblePay 22.5 rand (VAT included) → Sinking
The item sold for 1,000 randCharge the customer 150 rand plus VATNo charge (unregistered)
Actual VAT Payments150-75-30-22.5 = 22.5 rand75 + 30 + 22.5 = 127.5 rand (sunk costs)

After registering for VAT, you actually only need to pay 22.5 rand, whereas if you don’t register, you’ll miss out on 127.5 rand in input tax credits.

II. Under what circumstances is it mandatory to register for South African VAT?

According to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) regulations:

Mandatory Registration: In any consecutive 12-month period, taxable sales exceed2.3 million rand(Approximately 920,000 RMB).

Voluntary Registration: Annual taxable revenue exceeding120,000 rand(Approximately 48,000 RMB); voluntary registration is optional.

Key Tip: If annual revenue has exceeded the mandatory registration threshold but the business has not registered, SARS may retroactively assess the VAT due for the period during which the business was unregistered, along with interest and penalties,Up to 200% of the tax due.

We recommend that you proactively contact a tax advisor to apply for VAT registration once your monthly revenue consistently exceeds 80,000 rand (approximately 1 million rand on an annualized basis).

III. Cross-Border Stores vs. Domestic Stores: VAT Treatment Is Completely Different

Effective tax burden15% (Full Amount)8%–12% (after deductions)

Under the cross-border store model, the Takealot platform acts as a VAT agent, directly withholding 15%VAT from your settlement proceeds and filing the return on your behalf. You do not need to file a return with SARS yourself. However, you cannot claim any input tax credit for this 15%, so it is effectively paid in full.

Under the local store model, you are a local VAT taxpayer and are required to file VAT returns with SARS every two months. However, you can claim input tax credits for business-related expenses, so your actual tax burden will be lower than under the cross-border store’s withholding method.

IV. Three Major Benefits of Voluntarily Registering for VAT

  1. Input Tax Credit: All compliant business expenses are eligible for input VAT credits, thereby reducing the actual tax burden.
  2. Improving Compliance and Creditworthiness: SARS maintains more comprehensive tax records for VAT-registered businesses, which aids in bank account opening reviews and corporate credit background checks.
  3. An operational identity more in line with that of local South African businesses: This will help with subsequent applications for FNB supplier credit lines, major client contracts, and the like.
