Takealot Return Rates and SLA Thresholds: Four tiers of handling ranging from 2% to 8%; only three categories of returns are included in performance evaluations
Published: September 16, 2026

Sellers who are used to selling on European and American sites are often surprised by one figure when they first start selling on Takealot:The average return rate is only 1% to 2.5%...which is significantly lower than the 5% to 15% ratios commonly seen in European and U.S. markets. A low return rate means lower after-sales costs and less capital tied up, which is part of the South African market’s structural advantage.

However, a low return rate is an ”average level,” not a ”tolerance level.” Takealot treats the return rate as a core metric in its SLA evaluations and takes a very strict approach to handling returns.

Only three types of returns are included in the performance evaluation.

Let’s get the facts straight—many sellers are worrying for no reason. According to industry sources, only the following three types of returns are counted toward the return rate:

  • Damaged Goods(damaged goods)
  • Wrong Item Shipped(wrong item)
  • Does not match the description(Not what I ordered)

Orders canceled by customers or automatically canceled by the platformExcluded fromReturn rate. So when analyzing backend data, don’t let returns categorized as ”available inventory” throw you off—just focus on these three categories.

Evaluation CriteriaRolling calculation over the past 6 months...not a calendar year, nor a single month. This means that a single major quality incident will continue to drag down your metrics for the next six months.

Four Levels of Action: From Normal to Account Suspension

According to industry sources, the platform’s disposal procedures are generally divided into four categories:

  • 2% or less: Safe Zone, Operating Normally
  • 2% to 5%: Warning: We have received a notification from the platform that we must submit an explanation of corrective actions.
  • 5% to 8%: Red Zone—Traffic Restrictions, Decline in Search Rankings
  • More than 81 TP3T: Sales privileges suspended, funds frozen

A practical rule of thumb: If a single product receives four or more ”damaged upon delivery” return reports within 30 days, the problem is almost certainly not with the customer, but with the packaging or the product itself. Either change the packaging, switch suppliers, or take the product off the shelves—dragging this out will only result in losses for the entire account.

The Most Easily Overlooked Activation Thresholds for New Stores

After the store is activated You must manually upload at least 5 original product links within 15 days.. The requirements are very specific: you must upload the listings manually; you cannot use “listing follow” as a substitute; the listings must be original; you cannot copy existing links from others; and both quantity and quality must meet the standards.

Failure to complete this step will result in your store being placed in ”mandatory hiatus” status, with traffic restricted or even frozen. We recommend preparing the main images, product descriptions, and specifications for at least five products before opening your store; the countdown begins the moment your store is activated.

Several other hard red lines

In addition to the return rate, the following actions may directly result in account suspension, andLinked accounts will be deleted as well.::

  • Sale of counterfeit or infringing goods; sale of counterfeit brand-name or unauthorized merchandise
  • Product safety violations; lack of mandatory certifications such as NRCS and ICASA
  • False advertising; the description is significantly at odds with reality
  • Multiple accounts linked; operating multiple stores under the same IP address, legal representative, payment account, or address
  • After getting banned, create a new account with different information

Linkage between multiple accounts is the most insidious pitfall. Platforms identify such linkages through multiple dimensions, including IP addresses, corporate entity information, payment accounts, and business addresses. If you truly need to operate multiple stores, the information, equipment, and network environment for each store must be completely independent.

Treat the Return Rate as an Operational Metric

A low return rate isn’t a matter of luck—it’s a result. We recommend making the following checkpoints part of the product selection process: packaging durability, accuracy of product descriptions, and SKU coding correspondence; conducting random inspections before products leave the warehouse; and establishing a 30-day review process for SKUs with high return rates.

Platform rules are subject to change at any time; please refer to the announcements in the Takealot Seller Dashboard and official policies for details. Qicaiying can assist sellers in reviewing the compliance checklist for the South Africa site, ensuring alignment with each requirement—from certification and tax compliance to operational SLAs.
