Opening a bank account in Hong Kong is the first hurdle many cross-border sellers face after registering a Hong Kong company.

01 Main Types of Bank Accounts in Hong Kong

Type 1: Traditional Commercial Bank Account

Representative Bank:HSBC, Standard Chartered, Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK), Hang Seng

Advantage:

  • Highest international recognition and strong trust from clients and platforms
  • Supports more than 15 currencies, ideal for cross-market payments
  • You can open settlement accounts in major currencies such as the U.S. dollar, the euro, and the British pound.
  • A bank endorsement is helpful for platforms (such as Amazon, Shopify, etc.)

Disadvantage:

  • High account opening requirements (HSBC typically requires sufficient proof of business activity and an in-person interview)
  • Account opening takes a long time (ranging from 2 to 8 weeks)
  • KYC verification is strict, and applications with incomplete documentation are likely to be rejected.

Good for the crowd: Companies with established operations and a stable transaction history; cross-border sellers who need to open multi-currency accounts.

Type 2: Virtual Bank Accounts

Representative Bank:ZA Bank, Mox Bank, WeLab Bank

Advantage:

  • The account opening process is entirely online and takes 1–3 business days at the earliest.
  • No minimum deposit required
  • Ideal for newly registered companies

Disadvantage:

  • Some platforms (such as Amazon) do not accept payments made through virtual bank accounts.
  • There are quite a few restrictions on the transfer and wire transfer functions.
  • Customer service responses are relatively slow

Good for the crowd: Companies that are just starting out and urgently need a Hong Kong bank account; companies that primarily use third-party payment platforms such as Stripe and Payoneer.

Type 3: Offshore Commercial Banks

Representative Bank:DBS (Hong Kong), OCBC (Hong Kong), and CBI (Hong Kong)

Advantage:

  • Relatively user-friendly for opening accounts for new companies (some banks offer video-based KYC verification from the mainland, eliminating the need to travel to Hong Kong)
  • Multi-currency support is good
  • Ideal for cross-border trade, e-commerce, and freight forwarding

Disadvantage:

  • Brand awareness is lower than that of HSBC and Standard Chartered
  • Support on some international platforms is somewhat limited

Good for the crowd: Companies whose business is primarily overseas and do not require a highly localized Hong Kong account; companies with ODI fund transfer needs.

02 List of Account Opening Documents (General Version)

Data Typeelement
Corporate DocumentsCertificate of Incorporation + Business Registration Certificate + Articles of Incorporation
Director ProfilesPassport (valid for at least 6 months) + Proof of address (issued within the last 3 months)
Shareholder InformationPassport + Proof of Address (same as the director’s)
business certificate2–3 recent business contracts + customer invoices or supplier quotes
Corporate StructureIf a shareholder is a legal entity, the relevant documents for that legal entity must be provided.

03: 3 Common Reasons for Account Opening Rejections

Reason 1: Insufficient business documentation
Banks need to see that the “business is genuine.” Since new companies have no transaction history, they must provide a business plan, a letter of intent, or a letter of recommendation from a client to supplement this information.

Reason 2: Suspicious registered address
If the registered address is a virtual address (with no street sign or physical space), some banks will reject the application outright, citing the inability to verify the authenticity of the company’s operations.

Reason 3: Poor performance during the in-person interview
During the in-person interview, the bank will ask questions about your company’s business operations, sources of funds, and projected transaction volume. If you cannot clearly explain your company’s business operations or if your answers are inconsistent, the bank will become suspicious.
