Mr. Liang from Guangzhou opened his first Singapore bank account in 2024 via a remote video call with OCBC, simply to use it as a means of receiving payments.
In 2026, he upgraded to an OCBC Premier account, which included demand and time deposit accounts in seven additional currencies, a multi-currency VISA card, waivers on cross-border wire transfer fees, an insurance concierge service, and a dedicated account manager.
He said, ”OCBC used to be just a tool, but now it’s a wallet solution that combines financial management, lifestyle, and business.”

OCBC's Three-Tier Account System
OCBC categorizes its customers into three tiers:
Standard Basic Account: Start with an average daily balance of 1,000 SGD (approximately 5,500 RMB). Multi-currency account (5 currencies), no fees for ATM withdrawals outside Singapore (up to 5 times per month), and a free WiFi banking app. No account maintenance fees.
Premier Hongfu Wealth Management: Average daily balance of 35,000 Singapore dollars (approximately 190,000 RMB). Multi-currency account (12 currencies), dedicated account manager for select cities, cross-border wire transfer fee waivers (8 free transfers per month), airport lounge access (6 visits per year), and global travel insurance.
Private Bank: Average daily balance of at least 2 million Singapore dollars (approximately 11 million RMB). Family office services, cross-border asset allocation trusts, and family legal advisory services.
For most people who travel abroad,Premier is the best value-for-money option. After Mr. Liang was promoted to Premier, the savings from annual wire transfer fees and airport lounge access alone were enough to cover the difference in the qualification threshold.

The Hidden Value of Multi-Currency Accounts
Many customers use OCBC solely as a U.S. dollar account, but in fact, with Premier, you can open accounts in up to 12 different currencies at the same time:
Major Cryptocurrencies: USD, HKD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, JPY, CHF, NZD, SGD.
Emerging Market Currencies: CNY, MYR, THB, IDR, ZAR, AED, SAR, etc.
This is OCBC’s greatest hidden advantage—you can exchange multiple currencies right within the same banking app (with exchange rates that are 0.3–0.51 TP3T higher than those of PingPong and Airwallex), but it makes up for this with instant transfers, zero fees, and compliant funding methods.
Mr. Liang’s cross-border e-commerce business involves receiving U.S. dollars, paying British influencers in pounds, and paying a Singaporean design firm in Singapore dollars—three transactions that used to require switching between PingPong, a mainland U.S. dollar account, and wire transfers, but are now all handled through OCBC Premier.
📌 The core value of a multi-currency account lies not in exchange rates, but in the compliance benefits of ”unified receipts and payments.” Following the CRS information exchange, you will need a complete transaction history for all multi-currency transactions.

The Three Best Routes for Cross-Border Transfers
OCBC → Mainland Chinese banks with the same name (Bank of China/Industrial and Commercial Bank of China):For international wire transfers (SWIFT), Premier accounts get 8 free transfers per month; each additional transfer costs 12–25 SGD. Funds are credited on T+1.
OCBC → Bank of Hong Kong:Use FAST for real-time transfers (the Singaporean equivalent of the Hong Kong system); it’s free and funds are credited instantly. The recipient must also use a Hong Kong bank that partners with OCBC.
OCBC → Mainland China/Hong Kong Third-Party Payment Providers:By integrating with platforms such as PayPal, Skrill, and Airwallex, the channel fees range from 0.5 to 21 TP3T, but this provides a compliant channel for amounts ”over $50,000.”
Mr. Liang’s Combined Strategy: For amounts under $50,000 per transaction, use OCBC Premier for cross-border wire transfers; for amounts over $50,000, use the Airwallex channel; and for internal transactions with companies in Hong Kong, China, use FAST.
Over the course of a year, this package saves 60% in wire transfer costs compared to the past.

Two Key Milestones for Upgrading to Premier
Threshold 1: Cross-border transaction volume exceeds 300,000 RMB per month.
Once the frequency of your cross-border payments reaches this level, the number of wire transfers included in the Standard plan will clearly be insufficient. If you need to make more than 8 wire transfers per month, we recommend upgrading directly to the Premier plan.
Scenario 2: When seeking financing or cross-border payment credit.
Premier customers enjoy preferential interest rates ranging from 0.5 to 11 TP3T on Quick & Easy Loans (Personal Loans), cross-border payment advances, and overseas real estate mortgage services.
Mr. Liang upgraded to Premier in November 2025 precisely because he needed a mortgage to buy a home in Singapore.
OCBC is not only a cross-border settlement tool but also a gateway to financial asset allocation in Southeast Asia, family office accounts, and business residency services. The marginal benefit of upgrading to Premier in 2026 is already far greater than the threshold difference itself.
