VAT is a source of confusion for many Takealot sellers—is it legal not to register? Is it worth it to register? Will it just create more hassle? This article clears up all these questions at once.
💡 Not sure if your monthly revenue requires you to register for South African VAT? Add WeChat ID qcygscszk or call 18676749275, and send [VAT Assessment] to get a free one-on-one evaluation.

The VAT rate in South Africa is15%, applicable to transactions involving goods and services that take place within South Africa.
VAT Registration Threshold: If your annual taxable turnover exceeds1 million rand(Approximately 380,000 RMB), VAT registration is mandatory. For amounts below 1 million rand, registration is voluntary; businesses may choose to register or not.
Threshold for voluntary VAT registration: annual revenue of50,000 rand(Approximately 19,000 RMB) is all it takes to apply for voluntary registration.
Cross-border Stores: As a VAT agent, the Takealot platform withholds 15%VAT directly from your settlement funds and files the return on your behalf. You do not need to file a return with SARS yourself. However, you cannot claim any input tax credit for this 15% amount, so it is effectively paid in full.
Local Stores: As a local VAT taxpayer, you are required to file VAT returns with SARS every two months. However, you can claim input tax credits for business-related expenses (such as warehousing fees, logistics fees, certification fees, etc.), so your actual tax burden will be lower than under the withholding method used by cross-border stores.
📌 Want to calculate how much tax a local store can actually save after registering for VAT? Add WeChat ID qcygscszk and send [VAT Calculation] to get a one-on-one comparison.

✔️ Deductible Input Tax: All compliant business expenses (such as warehousing, transportation, and certification) are eligible for VAT input tax credits, thereby reducing the actual tax burden.
✔️ Improving Compliance Credit: SARS maintains more comprehensive tax records for VAT-registered businesses, which facilitates bank account opening reviews and corporate credit background checks.
✔️ A business identity more closely aligned with that of local South African companies: This will help with subsequent applications for FNB supplier credit lines, major client contracts, and the like.
If annual revenue exceeds 1 million rand but the business is not registered for VAT, SARS may retroactively assess the VAT due for the period during which the business was not registered, along with interest and penalties,Up to 200% of the tax due.
✔️ Recommendation: Once your monthly revenue consistently exceeds 80,000 rand (approximately 1 million rand on an annualized basis), proactively contact a tax advisor to apply for VAT registration; don’t wait until SARS comes to audit you before taking action.
