How Can You Get the Best Value When Using a Hong Kong Card Linked to WeChat Pay and Alipay for Purchases in Mainland China?
Published: August 19, 2026

Xiao Chen, who runs an independent e-commerce site in Shenzhen, opened a Bank of China (Hong Kong) account last year. He discovered that after linking his Hong Kong bank card to WeChat, when he scans a QR code to make a payment on the mainland, the amount is deducted directly in Hong Kong dollars at the daily exchange rate, without the need to exchange currency in advance.

This feature is particularly useful for cross-border sellers. Once overseas payments are received, there’s no need to rush to convert the currency. By linking your WeChat Pay or Alipay accounts, you can use the funds directly for everyday purchases—it’s convenient and allows you to take advantage of better exchange rate opportunities.

01

Which Hong Kong credit cards can be linked to WeChat Pay and Alipay?

Currently, the main Hong Kong banks that support linking to WeChat Pay include HSBC, Bank of China (Hong Kong), Standard Chartered, Hang Seng, ICBC Asia, and China Merchants Bank (Wing Lung), among others. The Hong Kong version of Alipay primarily supports merchants registered with the Hong Kong version of Alipay, while the mainland version of Alipay offers relatively limited support for Hong Kong bank cards.

To link a Hong Kong bank card to WeChat Pay, follow this path: Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards → Add Bank Card. Enter the Hong Kong bank card number, expiration date, and CVV, and after verifying the SMS code, the card will be linked.

Please note that the Hong Kong bank card you link must have the “online payment” and “international transaction” features enabled. Some banks enable these features by default, while others require you to enable them manually through mobile banking or at a bank teller window.

02

How Are Charges Deducted for Mainland China Transactions?

Once linked, when you scan a QR code to make a purchase in mainland China, WeChat will automatically convert the RMB amount into HKD at the exchange rate in effect that day and deduct the amount from your Hong Kong card. The exchange rate is typically based on the card issuer’s real-time rate, though it may vary slightly among different banks.

There is generally no additional service fee for each transaction, but the bank may charge a currency conversion fee ranging from 1% to 1.5%. The specific fee depends on the issuing bank's pricing policy.

Transaction and daily limits are determined jointly by the bank and WeChat Pay. Newly linked cards typically have lower limits, but you can apply to increase them after using the card for a while. For large purchases, we recommend adjusting the limit with your bank in advance.

What scenarios is it suitable for?

Scenario 1: Everyday small purchases.Restaurants, supermarkets, rideshares, and food delivery—pay directly with your Hong Kong card; no need to exchange currency in advance. Ideal for people who have a Hong Kong dollar balance and don’t want to exchange currency frequently.

Scenario 2: Exchange Rate Arbitrage Window. When the Hong Kong dollar depreciates, using a Hong Kong credit card for purchases is equivalent to “spending foreign currency at a lower rate”; when the renminbi appreciates, it’s a good time to exchange currency in advance. It all comes down to your own assessment of exchange rates.

Scenario 3: Cash Flow for Cross-Border Sellers.Once funds from overseas platforms are transferred to a Hong Kong account, a portion is used directly for spending in mainland China, thereby reducing the number of currency conversions and associated fees.

Scenario 4: Children’s Education or Household Expenses. Some parents keep Hong Kong dollars in Hong Kong bank accounts, link them to WeChat, and use the funds as living expenses for their children studying in mainland China.

Things to Keep in Mind and Pitfalls to Avoid

First, once a Hong Kong credit card is linked to WePay, transaction records will show amounts in Hong Kong dollars. If you need a complete mainland receipt, some merchants may not be able to provide a corresponding receipt in Hong Kong dollars.

Second, large transactions may trigger the bank's risk control measures. We recommend making multiple small transactions to avoid a sudden large single transaction.

Third, some banks charge additional fees for “non-Hong Kong local transactions,” so be sure to ask for details before activating the service.

Fourth, if a Hong Kong bank card remains unused for an extended period, some banks may charge an account maintenance fee. Linking the card to WeChat Pay and making frequent small transactions can help keep the account active.

Fifth, be mindful of tax implications. If you frequently use a Hong Kong account to make purchases in mainland China—especially for large amounts—it is advisable to keep records of these transactions to avoid having your tax residency status questioned.
