The renewal window has been extended from 4 weeks to 3 months
Effective March 1, 2026, the Hong Kong Immigration Department has significantly extended the deadline for renewal applications under major talent schemes—such as the High-Caliber Talent Pass and the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme—from ‘four weeks before expiration‘ to ’three months before expiration.”
On the surface, this seems to provide more time to prepare, but behind the scenes, the Immigration Department is actually sending a clear message: the review process for visa renewals is becoming increasingly rigorous, and for those whose application materials aren’t strong enough, even an extra three months won’t be enough to make up for it.
According to the latest data from the High-Talent Pass Association, among the first batch of High-Talent Pass applicants, the renewal approval rate for Category A was approximately 77%, for Category B approximately 50%, and for Category C only 40%. The key factor behind these differences is not educational background, but the depth of their ‘genuine ties to Hong Kong.”
If you’re facing a similar situation—worried that your renewal documents may be insufficient—feel free to scan the QR code to contact Qicaiying’s online customer service (WeChat/Phone: 18620388671), and we’ll help you organize your chain of evidence regarding your Hong Kong-related activities three months in advance.

Renewing the Gaocaitong: Having a Real Job Is the Key Requirement
The only mandatory requirement for renewing a High-Talent Pass is to have stable employment in Hong Kong or to operate a genuine business. Relying on savings or being affiliated with another entity is no longer an option.
The Immigration Department is now focusing on verifying three key points: whether the employment contract is genuine, whether the pay stubs reflect market rates, and whether Mandatory Provident Fund contributions are made on time.
If you're self-employed as an entrepreneur, your company must have a physical office space, local employees, business contracts, and audit reports. A shell company with zero revenue has virtually no chance of getting its visa renewed.

Talent Scheme Renewal: ‘Habitual Residence” Does Not Mean Staying in a Hotel
The renewal model for the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme is 3+3+2, and the core requirement is ‘ordinarily residing in Hong Kong.’ However, many people misunderstand this phrase.
The Immigration Department's criteria include: entering Hong Kong at least once every six months; renting or owning a home in Hong Kong; having children enrolled in school in Hong Kong; and having local bank statements and insurance records.
The latest trend in 2026 is that first-time renewal applicants with scores exceeding 60% are only granted one-year short-term visas. The main reason for this is ‘weak ties to Hong Kong’—they visit Hong Kong only a few times a year, stay exclusively in hotels, and have no proof of a fixed address.
If you are away from Hong Kong for an extended period, you must provide a detailed explanation of the reason for your absence and your future plans to visit Hong Kong; otherwise, the validity period of your visa renewal will be significantly reduced.

These Four Types of People Are Most Likely to Have Their Visas Denied Upon Renewal
Category 1: Long-term absence from Hong Kong without a reasonable explanation. The Immigration Department is rapidly tightening its tolerance for ‘settling elsewhere,” and inspection efforts were significantly stepped up in Q3 of 2026.
Category 2: Registration with a shell company. These ‘three-no companies”—which have no actual business operations, no local employees, and no office space—will be immediately denied renewal upon discovery.
Category 3: Salary significantly below market levels. The High-Talent Pass (Category A) requires an annual salary of at least 2.5 million Hong Kong dollars for application; however, if your salary drops sharply at the time of renewal, the Immigration Department will question whether you have made a genuine contribution.
Category 4: Submitting an application hastily without adequate preparation. The three-month grace period is not meant for you to wait until the last minute, but to give you time to complete the chain of evidence.

Practical Recommendations for the 2026 Renewal
Step 1: Start gathering your Hong Kong-related documents now. These include lease agreements, utility bills (electricity, water, and gas), monthly bank statements, Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) records, and proof of your children’s enrollment in schools in Hong Kong.
Step 2: If you are starting a business as a self-employed individual, ensure that your company has genuine business transactions, employs at least one local employee, and pays MPF and profits tax on time.
Step 3: If you plan to be away from Hong Kong for an extended period, prepare a detailed statement explaining your departure in advance, including a timeline and specific plans for your future return to Hong Kong.
Step 4: Before renewing your visa, have a professional agency conduct a preliminary review of your documents so you can address any deficiencies before officially submitting your application. Don’t wait until the Immigration Department sends you a request for additional information before scrambling to fix things.
