How Exactly Do You Get Product Selection and Logistics to Work on Meike Duo?
Published: September 8, 2026

A-Cheng, who sells small home goods, made his first fortune last year by testing the waters on Meikeduo. This year, he wants to scale up his business, but he’s found that logistics are becoming an increasingly “heavy” burden—exposure for direct shipping-only listings is declining, and the platform is aggressively promoting local warehouses. He’s a bit confused: How exactly should he stock his inventory?

In its Q1 2026 financial report, Mercado Libre reported GMV of $19 billion, with cross-border business growing 68% year-over-year; however, the platform’s dynamics have also shifted: local fulfillment has become a critical barrier to traffic, while free shipping in Brazil and mandatory RFC verification in Mexico are reshaping product selection.

This article clearly explains Mercado Libre’s product selection process, logistics tiers, and tax guidelines—sellers planning to expand into the Latin American market should bookmark it.

01

The logic behind the 2026 platform has changed.

Mercado Libre is Latin America’s largest e-commerce platform, operating in 18 countries with over 283 million monthly active users. In Q1 2026, its GMV reached $19 billion, with cross-border business growing 681% year-over-year, and fintech assets under management nearing $20 billion. The company is transitioning from an “e-commerce” model to a dual-engine model of “digital finance + e-commerce.”

Three opportunity windows in the second half of 2026: Brazil’s free shipping threshold is expected to drop to around 69 reais, with the highest traffic going to small, lightweight items priced between $10 and $30 and weighing less than 500 grams; following the mandatory RFC verification in Mexico, compliant sellers will gain a relative advantage in Q4; Chile, Colombia, and Argentina are in their early growth phases, with competition levels far lower than in Brazil and Mexico.

The most significant change in logistics: Starting March 1, 2026, FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) orders will be completely removed from the organic traffic pool on the main search page; direct-to-consumer listings will see a decline in visibility; and local inventory will shift from being a bonus factor to a mandatory requirement. The platform will strongly prioritize products fulfilled locally (FBL and semi-managed warehousing).

How to Rank Product Selection by Priority

Ranked by market maturity: The Brazilian market has the highest traffic but is the most competitive; it is suitable for sellers with registered trademarks or brand equity who can handle certification processes. The Mexican market is growing the fastest; the local beauty industry is weak, and there is high acceptance of Chinese brands. Chile has a high average order value and is a prime market for brands expanding overseas; Colombia has a population of over 50 million, while Argentina has considerable purchasing power but strict foreign exchange controls.

By product category: 3C accessories and small home goods will be the fastest-growing categories in 2025–2026, while cosmetics and personal care products will maintain stable gross margins, and demand for auto parts and outdoor gear will increase. The recommended price range is $5–$35 to align with Latin American purchasing power. Note on Certifications: Electronics require INMETRO/ANATEL certification; cosmetics require compliance registration; and maternity and baby products require brand registration. Failure to comply will result in product removal.

The 2026 World Cup has also spurred demand for products like projectors, speakers, barbecue grills, and recliners for watching the games. In short: Start by testing the market with lightweight, small items that have high repurchase rates, then scale up sales gradually based on the maturity of each sales channel—don’t start by stocking heavy, bulky items right away.

The Three Levels of Logistics

Stage 1: Cross-border stores (CBT) with self-fulfillment: Domestic companies open stores directly without the need for a local entity; this is suitable for testing product performance and refining business models. The disadvantages include high taxes withheld by the platform, complex payment processing, and high long-term compliance risks. The minimum average order value is $4.

Stage 2: Semi-Managed: Stock products at the official warehouse in Shatian, Dongguan. Sellers retain control over product selection, pricing, and operations, while the platform handles warehousing, distribution, and last-mile delivery. Stores with annual sales exceeding $300,000 are eligible for commission reductions of up to 50% and a 30-day waiver on warehousing fees, balancing flexibility with efficiency.

Stage 3: Full Management (0% commission, 0% storage fees, 0% international shipping fees, 0% advertising fees; payment received approximately 7 days after successful delivery) or FBL Official Warehouses: Suitable for factory-based sellers with deep supply chain capabilities. Recommended Path: Self-fulfillment for product testing → Semi-managed fulfillment for scaling → Once you’ve built sufficient depth, switch to full-managed fulfillment or obtain brand certification to lower commissions directly through the Blue Badge program.

RFC Tax Red Lines

Starting in January 2026, the Mexico marketplace will fully implement platform-administered withholding and remittance. For sellers who have not uploaded their RFC tax ID, the platform will directly withhold 161 TP3T in VAT + 201 TP3T in income tax, for a total withholding of 361 TP3T; for business sellers who have registered their RFC, the total tax burden is only approximately 121 TP3T (41 TP3T in income tax + 81 TP3T in VAT).

By July 20, 2026, the platform will have completed verification of all sellers’ tax ID numbers, and non-compliant accounts will be restricted from operating. Starting August 1, the Brazil site will require mandatory split payments, which necessitate linking a local CPF/CNPJ and a Brazilian bank account; Under the dual VAT system (CBS/IBS), the comprehensive tax burden for cross-border stores is approximately 20%–25%, while local CNPJ-registered businesses can reduce this to 14%–18%.

So, before launching in Mexico or Brazil, make sure to obtain your local RFC or CPF tax ID and complete the entity consistency binding. Otherwise, the more you sell, the more tax will be withheld, and your profits will be directly reduced by more than one-third. This is a “compliance or survival” situation—there’s no other option.

How to Get the Latin American Market Up and Running

First, a step-by-step approach: CBT product testing → semi-managed volume scaling → full-managed/brand certification. Don’t skip the product testing phase and jump straight into capital-intensive operations. Second, tiered product selection: target Brazil and Mexico with lightweight, small, high-frequency items, and target Chile with branded products, while avoiding areas with high certification rejection rates.

Third, handle tax registration in advance: Obtain your Mexican RFC and Brazilian CPF/CNPJ before opening a store to avoid having your profits eroded by 36% withholding taxes. Fourth, limit each entity to five stores or fewer, and ensure each store operates in a “clean” environment; having stores shut down due to association with others is not worth the cost.

Treat Mercado Libre as a growth market and diversify risk by combining it with European and U.S. markets. The blue-ocean opportunity won’t last forever; only by entering the market in compliance with regulations (especially RFC) can you reap the benefits. Don’t trust brokers who promise to “take over the store.”
