Why are cross-border sellers all applying for it?

Almost all cross-border sellers run into the same problem: How do they collect payments from U.S. platforms?

PayPal charges high fees, third-party transfers take a long time to clear, and large deposits into personal accounts are frozen. In the end, I found that many people are opening accounts with Hua Mei Bank in the U.S.

This article isn't long—it gets straight to the point: what it is, whether you should do it, how to do it, and what pitfalls to watch out for.

What is Hua Mei Bank?

East West Bank, founded in 1973 and listed on NASDAQ, is the largest Chinese-owned bank in the United States, with approximately $70 billion in assets, over 120 branches across the U.S., and multiple offices in Greater China.

In a nutshell: A bank licensed in the United States, with Chinese-speaking staff, that specializes in cross-border financial services between China and the U.S.

Why Do Cross-Border Sellers Need It?

Key difference: Without a U.S. card, the payment flow is ”disconnected”; with a Huamei card, the entire chain—from receiving payments to making payments to receiving funds back—is fully connected.

Conclusion: Use PayPal for small, high-frequency transactions; for large payments, Huamei is the most cost-effective option. If your monthly transaction volume exceeds $50,000, the savings on transaction fees with Huamei are enough to cover the monthly fee.

The 3 Most Common Pitfalls When Applying for a Huamei Card

Pitfall 1: Thinking that once you’ve opened a business account, you don’t have to worry about taxes

The Huamei Card is merely a payment tool, not a tax avoidance tool. Interest must be reported on Form W-8BEN, and balances exceeding $50,000 must be reported on Form FBAR. Funds repatriated to China must also be included in your income tax return. The tool is compliant, but if it isn't reported, it is not compliant.

Pitfall 2: Receiving Business Payments from the Company into a Personal Account

If your monthly turnover exceeds $50,000 and you still use a personal account to receive large payments for goods, the bank’s risk control system will flag this as a ”mismatch in intended use.” The consequences range from review and restrictions to account closure.Once your cash flow increases, register a U.S. company and open a business bank account.

Pitfall 3: Wasting money on a monthly subscription

The monthly fee for personal accounts ranges from $10 to 25, but it is waived if the average daily balance meets the requirement (typically $1,000–2,500).The first thing to do when you open an account: Figure out the conditions for waiving the monthly fee.
