I. What is the 27% tax?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The corporate income tax rate in South Africa is 27% (reduced from 28% to 27% effective in 2023). This tax is levied on a company\u2019s taxable income, not on its revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taxable income is equal to total revenue minus allowable deductible expenses. Deductible expenses include purchase costs, logistics fees, warehousing fees, salaries, advertising expenses, professional service fees (accountants, lawyers), and depreciation of assets, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
II. Special Tax Rates for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SBCs)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
For eligible small and medium-sized enterprises (with annual turnover below 20 million rand), South African tax law provides progressive tax rates: The portion of taxable income between 0 and 95,750 rand is taxed at 0% (exempt); the portion between 95,751 and 365,000 rand is taxed at 7%; the portion between 365,001 and 550,000 rand is taxed at 21%, and amounts exceeding 550,000 rand are taxed at the standard rate of 27%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For small and medium-sized sellers with monthly sales ranging from 50,000 to 150,000 rand, the effective tax rate is typically between 12.1% and 18.1%, which is significantly lower than the nominal tax rate of 27.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
III. Case Study on Calculating the Effective Tax Burden<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Take a local store seller with monthly sales of 100,000 rand as an example: Annual revenue is 1.2 million rand. After deducting costs (purchases of 501 TP3T totaling 600,000 rand, logistics of 101 TP3T totaling 120,000 rand, warehousing of 50,000 rand, and payroll and management fees of 50,000 rand)\u2014for a total of 820,000 rand in costs\u2014the taxable income is approximately 380,000 rand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based on the SBC tax rate, the actual tax due is approximately 95,750 rand; the tax-exempt portion is 0 rand, plus approximately 18,843 rand calculated at 7% for the range from 95,751 to 365,000 rand, plus approximately 3,150 rand calculated at 21% for the range from 365,000 to 380,000 rand, for a total of approximately 22,000 rand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The effective tax rate is 22,000 divided by 380,000, which is approximately 5.81 TP3T\u2014significantly lower than 271 TP3T.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
